Papaya: The Fruit Also Known As "Pawpaw"
The fruit that is known for its sweet taste, but strange name(s). Today, I will explore and show you the benefits and cons of papaya, as well as a bonus (psst, it's a recipe).
There are a lot of fruits out in the world. Still, even with the 200 types of fruit we eat, we still cannot eat 100,000 other types of fruits because they are not edible. Papaya is a fruit that is edible but it is not talked about too much. Now it is time to shine a light on what papaya can do for us.
But first, what is papaya?
The papaya, or pawpaw, is a species of plant called Carica papaya. It is one of the 21 accepted families of Caricaceae. Papaya is native to Southern Mexico, Central America, and parts of the world in a tropical climate.
What Papaya does for you:
Reduces heart disease
Papaya is high in antioxidants, which help to reduce heart disease.Contains essential vitamins
Vitamins also help prevent heart disease by preventing cholesterol from oxidizing, which is the main cause of heart disease.Reduces risk of diabetes
Papaya contains enzymes called papain and chymopapain, which aid in breaking down fats, proteins, and carbohydrates, preventing blood sugars from rising.Reduces chance of stroke
An antioxidant called lycopene helps with reducing chances of not only stroke, but heart disease.Aids in digestion
The enzymes found in papaya also help with digestion by breaking down proteins and reducing inflammation.Reduces risks of cancer
The papaya and the pulp contains benzyl glucosinolate, which is broken down into benzyl isothiocyanate, which has anticancer effects.Lowers blood pressure
Papaya is actually high in potassium, which is great for lowering blood pressure levels.Improves wound healing
The enzymes in papaya are wound-debriding agents, which assist removal of necrotic debris and induce development of healthy tissue.
Downsides of Papaya:
Can cause nausea and vomiting.
